Top 7 Best Romantic Films of All Time

There’s nothing quite like sitting alongside the love of your life, in front of your TV with a bag of popcorn, watching your favourite romantic film. It might inspire you to recreate a scene from the film when planning your engagement proposal. Diamond Heaven has picked the seven greatest romantic movies to watch with your partner.

The Notebook (2004)

The Notebook is a film adaptation based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, featuring two starcrossed lovers, Allie and Noah, who fall in love. However, their relationship comes crashing to an end when Allie moves to New York with her parents, only to meet again years later. It is one teen romantic drama that sends you through a rollercoaster of emotions, from joy to sadness, reminding you that love lasts forever.

Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Baz Luhrmann’s modern version of Romeo & Juliet features Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the main protagonists, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Luhrmann’s depiction of the classic William Shakespeare tragedy swaps swords and armour for guns and open-topped cars, a far cry from Verona, Italy. However, the film follows the same format as the play where Romeo and Juliet meet the same fate and family feuds face war or reconciliation.

Dirty Dancing (1987)

When you think of romantic films you should watch Dirty Dancing, it is the first thing that comes to mind. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey play Frances “Baby” Houseman and Johnny Castle, who works as a dance tutor in their holiday resort. The film’s ending involves Baby Houseman discovering a new world outside work and books and Johnny Castle dancing along to Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes’ (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life. That final dance scene remains one of the most iconic romantic film moments ever, with the most powerful quote that encourages every woman to never feel left in the corner and to know that she is special to someone. No wonder it is the perfect moment to recapture the perfect proposal format and, proof that love really has no boundaries.

Pretty Woman (1990)

We’ve lost count of how many times the Diamond Heaven team has watched Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere reprise their roles as Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis, where Vivian unexpectedly falls in love with Edward in Los Angeles despite the vastly different social backgrounds. Throughout the film, Edward and Vivian navigate through their parallel worlds and break all the social norms with very notable phrases that we all still repeat to this day. It is an iconic rom-com that should be on your romantic film viewing list for many different reasons.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Rob Reiner’s fantasy romantic classic tells the story of Westley and Buttercup falling in love with one another in the fictional kingdom of Florin. However, Westley separates from Buttercup and saves her from being kidnapped by the antagonists Inigo Montoya, Fezzik and Vizzini. The Princess Bride is a cult classic worth watching with your other half on a Friday evening.

A Star is Born (2018)

Bradley Cooper’s take on the classic film sees him play musician Jackson Maine, who discovers the struggling singer Ally (played by Lady Gaga) after a concert. This modern take on a musical romantic drama sees Jackson and Ally forming a romantic relationship and trying to balance a relationship with powerful careers despite privately battling drug and alcohol addictions. Despite an initial upbeat start, the ending takes a tragic turn, leaving Ally heartbroken and brings us all back to reality that nothing lasts forever and we need to enjoy every day we have together with the ones we love.

Titanic (1997)

A 90’s classic. James Cameron’s epic romantic drama features Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as Rose and Jack. It tells a fictional depiction of a romantic relationship on the RMS Titanic. Despite the tragic storyline that has us all cuddling and reaching for the tissues Titanic became one of the highest-grossing films ever, grossing $2.3 billion (£1.8 billion in British pound sterling) since releasing in 1997. We cannot stop crying watching the beautiful journey Jack and Rose go on breaking the higher class decorum and creating a new meaning to fighting for love which we all relate to and aspire to.
